What to see

Schonbrunn. Photo by Schloss Schoenbrunn Kultur- und Betriebsges.m.b.H.

Schloss Schönbrunn
Popular Schloss Schönbrunn and its adjoining garden are second only to Versailles in a show of imperial wealth and might, although that wasn’t the idea; this baroque palace is a much-diminished version of the grandiose centerpiece originally planned.

Hofburg (Imperial Palace)
Hofburg (Imperial Palace)
The Hofburg (Imperial Palace) is an incredible show of power and the depths of an imperial purse. This impressive repository of culture and heritage was the home to one of the most powerful empires Europe has ever seen: the Habsburgs based themselves here for over six centuries.

MuseumsQuartier © Lisi Gradnitzer
MuseumsQuartier
It may have only been operating since 2001 but the MuseumsQuartier, with its excellent museums, great cafés and warm public spaces, has already gained third spot on Vienna’s most visited list. The major open space Haupthorf is constantly used for happenings and events in the summer and winter months.

What to do

Konzerhaus. Photo by Herbert Schwingenschlögl
Listen to music at Konzerhaus
The Konzerhaus is a major venue in classical music circles, but is not the limit of this venue with ethnic music, rock, pop and jazz appearing throughout the year. Tickets vary from an affordable €10 through to around €100.

Kunstlerhaus
Discover Künstlerhaus
A glass box beneath the Künstlerhaus, Künstlerhauspassage is a refuge for Vienna’s art scene. Spoken word performances, films, live music and DJs take turns entertaining a thoroughly alternative crowd. The adjoining amphitheatre next door is a perfect escape from the sweaty dance floor.

Burgtheater. Photo by Thierry
Visit Burgtheater
The Burgtheater (National Theatre) is one of the prime theatre venues in the German-speaking world. Renaissance style, the interior has stairway frescoes by the Klimt brothers. Snap up bargain tickets just before the show starts - or you can take a tour of the theatre, being a draw in itself.

Where to eat

Franziskanerplatz
Franziskanerplatz
A menu strongly representing Austrian standards, with a hint of Asian and Italian cuisine, greet diners at Immervoll, whilst the venue is a surprisingly cozy space. Seating on the Franziskanerplatz in summer is the very best feature of all.

Concordia
Schnitzel degustation at Schloss Concordia
Educate yourself with the Degustationmenü at Schloss Concordia, a hefty plate with all sorts of schnitzel. Great for meat-lovers but there are a smattering of vegetarian options too. Gargantuan mirrors, a stained glass roof and candlelight in the evening create a unique experience.

Plush
Lounge atmosphere at Plush
Plush new restaurant Neu Wien has the look and feel of a lounge bar. The cuisine harks back to the Habsburg empire with the likes of roasted fillet of zander, fillet of Alp ox, and proper veal Wiener schnitzel filling the menu. After the meal head downstairs for live cabaret and music.
